Margaret Prang was born in Stratford, Ontario and received a B.A. from the University of Manitoba (1945) and an M.A. (1953) and Ph.D. (1959) from the University of Toronto. She joined the Department of History at the University of British Columbia in 1959 and served as department head from 1974 to 1979.
